Chalet La Pedevilla: A Modern Interpretation of Traditional Alpine Architecture

The design of the Chalet La Pedevilla was inspired by the hamlets of the Dolomite region, small urban settlements with a unique cultural and architectural tradition. The pair-style design, consisting of a tenement and a farmhouse, is a common feature in these hamlets. Pedevilla Architects have incorporated regional characteristics such as the gable roof, loggias, and timber facade into their design, but with a modern twist.

The buildings are unique in their construction. The structural element, which extends from the base to the roof, is cast in exposed concrete with aggregates of dolomite rock. The timber used, mainly larch and pine, is of regional origin. The exterior timber shell, complete with loggias, is painted black, providing a striking contrast to the white concrete walls and ceilings of the interior. Hand-hewn solid timber flooring, windows, and furniture add a natural touch to the modern design.

The Chalet La Pedevilla is not only a design marvel but also a testament to sustainable construction. The buildings are self-contained, capable of operating independently for extended periods. The site has its own water source, and the buildings utilize geothermal and solar energy for their power needs. This self-sufficiency is a characteristic feature of the hamlets in the region and was a key inspiration for the design.

The construction of the Chalet La Pedevilla presented several challenges. The architects had to create a design that was unique yet aligned with the traditional pair-style houses of the hamlets. The old farmhouse was transformed into a modern residence, while the stable became the chalet. The construction process itself was a challenge, with all fixtures attached before the moulding process to create the exposed concrete walls and ceilings.

The Chalet La Pedevilla is a shining example of how traditional design elements can be reinterpreted in a modern context. The project was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2016, a testament to the innovative design and construction techniques employed by Pedevilla Architects. This project is a testament to the architects' ability to create a design that is both unique and respectful of its cultural and architectural heritage.
